 Royal Thai

The Royal Thai at Trans Asia has always been one of the most popular restaurants in town. The lavish colours of green and gold give you the feeling of warmth and welcomes you in, cosy but stylish. I was having one of my usual days so I was running a bit late. So when we did make it down to the restaurant our table was given out. This I thought was quite fair since running a bit late meant an hour and a half or so. Therefore we quite happily waited in their comfy waiting area and ordered some wine. Once sitting down we decided to go ahead and order while we were waiting  and having opened the very stylish menu which  I must say I’ve always been impressed with – we made our pick.

By the time the second bottle of wine was opened we were well along with our gastronomic conversation and were already seated at our table. The friendly atmosphere around also made it easy to simply sit back and enjoy yourself. For our appetizer we had ordered the Codmann Pla which i believe are the fish cakes. This was served with an amazing curry sauce. The sauce was almost like a Thai red curry sauce but lighter and worked amazingingly well with the fish cakes which were soft and slightly crispy to the bite. This is a classic dish almost everyone orders and will surely be a big hit with you if it’s not already.

When the soup arrived I was simply beaming for this is my all time favourite soup which is also such comfort food that in the terms of; Jerry McGuire “simply completes you”. There are several variations for this dish available at the Royal Thai so if one feels a bit confused simply go with the classic which has a combination of seafood. But I must warn you this can be slightly spicy.

After more wine, our main dishes arrived. I was in quite a bit of shock for the amount of food that was being placed on the table. To start off with the Som Tom Pooma which is the Green Papaya with Crab, Cashew nuts and Lime was super. This is probably the best and most unusual salad I have had in a very long time and I took my time enjoying it. The textures were perfect and the flavours were balanced. The funny thing being that I detest Papaya almost all the time and today I finished the entire salad almost alone. The difference was the papaya in this salad was not mushy like what you would normally get but crunchy.

The Phad Kaproo Hed and the Gaeng Kiew Warm Gai Nuea Rue Moo which is the Wok fried Mushrooms with Sauce and the Green Curry vegetable respectively were both great as you would expect. The next unusual dish was the Gai Har Bai Caey, which would be the Deep Fried Marinated Chicken wrapped in Pandam Leaves. This was again an exceptional dish simply on the wow factor. The way it was served simply sold it to me and of course the taste was exceptional. A slightly smoky flavour brought a difference to the regular Thai taste which I’ve been quite accustomed to. The next dish was the Choo Chee Goong which is the Sautéed Lagoon Prawns with home made Chilli Paste and Coconut Cream. This dish again did not fail to keep to the standards of the Royal Thai. But the dish of the evening was the Pla Yan Lak or you would know it as the Herb Crusted Whole Garoupa Fish with Mushrooms and Chilli Oil. Now this dish I must say would befit Royalty on sheer size alone. Usually when we order this dish it is on a special occasion. Be it a yearly event or such as a birthday or it could be that I beat my brother at something so having it today- was quite a treat.

After the lovely long meal I found myself cooling down by trying the Lemon Grass Ice Cream which was quite good and was the very thing I needed to complete my day. All around the Royal Thai has never let me down on any occasion and has been one of the finest restaurants in town. This is also well reflected in the fact that most of the time it’s next to impossible to walk in a get a table, especially on the weekends. Therefore I would highly recommend you making a prior reservation to make things easy. So if you already have not been here or you haven’t treated yourself in quite some time - well then The Royal Thai it should be. Enjoy!
