Food For Thought

 Summerfields

Another review, and yet another hotel buffet. For those of you  who are  somewhat envious of my life as a food critic may have begun to hope that  I am getting a  little sick of this by now, that eating out all the time  might be getting a bit repetitive and boring, well I am  sorry to disappoint you  but its not.  I love my weekly reviews, not just because I am greedy but because every restaurant experience is different- the company, the décor and of course the food  is never the same. Every week I find myself enjoying something new.

Even between the lunch buffets at Colombo's five star hotels there is so much variation- each has its own specialties and atmosphere.  Last week you might remember I was at the Intercontinental Café Emerald and this week we made our way to Summerfields, Trans Asia 's coffee shop, well known for serving its  tasty snacks and meals  24 hours a day,  but  also home to a very extensive lunch buffet.

After enjoying a small bowl of Cream of mushroom soup I was ready to start on the buffet and fill my plate according to my hunger's desire. While walking by a table laid with an assortment of appetizers, I couldn't keep from trying a prawn cocktail with mango which I shared with my photographer who, like me is a fan of the little pink delicacies.  , Overall the dish was tasty and is definitely a must try when you visit Summerfields. In addition to the prawn cocktail the buffet offers a range of appetizers including, amongst many other things, a tasty grilled vegetable terrine, a light rice salad and an unusual but pleasing apple and beetroot salad.

In my opinion this is one of the few places in town that has paid so much attention to its appetizers and starters, the choice is almost endless and this emphasis on hors d'oeuvres really sets Summerfield's buffet apart.

After tasting as many appetizers as my stomach could digest, I shifted my concentration to the heart of the buffet- the main course. As Spaghetti and Thai fried rice were today's specials I served a little bit of both on to my plate to please my gluttony and then moved on to dishes such as Chilli chicken with cashew nuts, Lamb with hot sauce, Vegetable chopsuey and Assorted grilled seafood with fruit salsa.

The lamb with hot sauce was an instant favourite and was one of the best dishes at the buffet.  The Chilli chicken with cashew nuts was fairly tasty but couldn't compete with the lamb dish. The assorted grilled seafood dish included a mix of prawns, squid and pieces of fish and gave out a tasty creamy flavour. Dishes such as the vegetable chopsuey, sauté potato and Mexican beef stew with coriander are some of the other dishes that one should be on the look out for.

Summerfields also offers a variety of desserts from chocolate mousse to fruit platters to watalapan. Luckily the chef at the restaurant was kind enough to bring out one of his creations- a fruit platter with homemade coconut ice cream. The ice cream was an instant hit and the fresh fruits really enriched its taste.
